Damon Fowler - Sugar Shack - Blind Pig Records 2009
I've heard about Damon Fowler for a little while now, since this album hit store shelves, and it's been nothing but positive commentary. A lot of insiders are predicting big things for this young gun; and with Sugar Shack hanging out at the top of several Blues and Roots music charts, there's no reason to doubt that claim.
This album really struck me, too, because I can sit down and listen to the song "VFW" and think about time spent with my grandpa at the American Legion Post as I grew up. I can see the people Fowler is singing about in his songs. It's relatable to me.
Fowler cites influences including R.L. Burnside next to Merle Haggard, next to Bob Marley (perhaps a big reason I like Fowler's music so much). He also boasts a wealth of talent on the guitar, dobro, and lap steel, as well as an unpolished but soulful voice. It's no surprise when you read Fowler's bio, either. He's been playing since he was a Florida youngster.
Enough with the compliments, though, you want to know about Sugar Shack, right?
The album is fantastic, and I wouldn't be surprised to see it earn numerous Blues award nominations. Fowler and his bandmates' talents are firmly on display on this disc, with original compositions like the title track and "Sugar Lee" providing an excellent showcase for the group.
There are some stellar covers on the album, as well, including great versions of "Tonight the Bottle Let Me Down" (Merle Haggard) and "I'm Just An Old Chunk of Coal" (Billy Joe Shaver).
Damon Fowler Group released three albums before their national release of Sugar Shack on Blind Pig Records, but by my estimation, this isn't the last time we'll hear from Fowler and company.
I highly recommend this album.
