Greg Nagy - Walk That Fine Thin Line - Big O Records 2009
I have been listening to this CD nearly non-stop since it arrived in my mailbox last week: Mostly because it is an excellent disc; but partly, also, because I was having trouble deciding where to begin with this review.
The album is terrific, and gets off on the right foot with the title track. Greg Nagy and back up vocalists belt out "Until we walk that fine thin line!" with no accompaniment, and you are sure not to forget the album's name from that point on. The song is great, and it's a perfect example of what to expect on the other nine tracks - stinging guitar with a rich, clean tone, and sharp licks, and Nagy's voice ringing out above it all.
Guitar accolades are nothing new for Greg Nagy, who has seen acclaim in national and international press for his fretwork, both solo, and in the band Root Doctor. He honors his bandmates from Root Doctor on Walk That Fine Thin Line, recording "Blues Will Take Good Care of You," written by Root Doctor's Jim Alfredson, who also lends his talents at the keyboard on roughly half the disc.
It's Nagy's vocals that stand out on Walk That Fine Thin Line, though, bringing a soulful depth, and at times, a little bit of heartache to each track on this CD. He even gets into a little of an Aaron Neville mode on the final cut, "She's My Baby," although not in the sense of a falsetto, but more of the lilting path that the vocals take on the Nagy-written song.
Nagy also scores writing and co-writing credits for several other songs on the CD, and selects some terrific covers, such as the Don Nix penned Albert King tune "For the Love of a Woman," and the cleverly written Keb Mo song, "You Can Love Yourself."
All in all, Walk That Fine Thin Line is a great album, and one that I had no problems listening to from start to finish: something hard to find in today's world of manufactured bubblegum pop and depressing rock.
